OS: When did you start boxing and can you talk about your boxing background?
GA: I was 17 years old when I started boxing and then I was part of the national team for almost four years.
OS: So what events did you participate in as part of the national team?
GA: As an amateur I represented the Philippines in Asian Women’s Boxing Championship in Taiwan and World Championship in Russia. Then in 2006, I turned professional and been under Panther Boxing ever since. I have a great foundation in regards to boxing.
OS: You are the current WIBA international minimum weight title holder. How did you feel when you defeated Looksaikongdin for the belt?
GA: I was happy, but my main goal is to be a world class boxer. I am not done yet and looking forward to bigger challenges and opportunities.
OS: What is the current status of women’s boxing in the Philippines? Does it get enough respect from the fans?
GA: Yes it does, but not as much when compared abroad. Women’s boxing is still virtually unknown here. Ana (Julaton) is the only one that is really known here because her fight was covered and shown here.
OS: You mentioned that Manny Pacquiao is your inspiration. How did Manny inspire you?
GA: The words of support and encouragement of Manny for all the boxers here in the Philippines.
OS: So what’s your goal or want to achieve within the next two years and who else inspires you beside Manny?
GA: My family and friends inspires me and my goal is to become a world champion like Manny.
OS: Let’s talk about the sport of boxing. How did it make a difference in your life?
GA: I finished my studies and was able to help my parents financially. It also helped me become fit and independent.
OS: What is your advice for young women, who want to be involved in the sports of boxing?
GA: Besides being physically fit, they must have the discipline and strong determination. Their choice today, determines their life tomorrow.
OS: Thanks for the interview Gretchen and good luck in your career.
GA: Thanks also.
