Just recently, Mayweather recorded a video in which he badmouthed and threw racist comments at Pacquiao. Yes, Mayweather's comments were racist and making excuses for what he said is nothing short of being ignorant. Some even defended his comments since they supposedly were based on facts.
Then what is the difference between Mayweather's comments and those by Fuzzy Zoeller and Don Imus awhile ago. Remember the hoopla, when Fuzzy Zoeller talked about how Tiger Woods should not order fried chicken and collard greens before a certain tournament and when Don Imus referred to some African American women basketball players as 'nappy headed h#@s.'
The fact is if Pacquiao had said similar comments to Mayweather, there is no doubt that there would be more ruckus and Al Sharpton would have been all over the television convincing everybody to boycott the Pacquiao vs. Margarito bout and deservedly so.
But it is what it is. Fair or not, deragatory comments towards other groups are more accepted. However, it validated the opinion of many Filipinos that racism played a part in the steroid issue regarding Pacquiao becoming bigger than what it should have been.
To be fair, Mayweather has already apologized for his recent remarks, but how many really felt that that it was genuine. Sorry, but I liken his apology to those white supremacists denying they are racist because they have 'minority' friends.
The bright side for Filipino fans though is Mayweather's latest tirade only proved that Pacquiao is the best pound for pound fighter today and the former knows it. If Mayweather truly believed that he is and had done enough to be considered the best fighter of his generation, then he wouldn't need to constantly badmouthed Pacquiao and proclaim that he is the best. He will let his accomplishments speak for itself.
But the truth is, he's not, not for the lack of talent, but because of his questionable decision making skills, which I talked about in the following article: The Most Talented, But Not The But Not The Greatest Boxer Of His Generation.
Floyd knows that boxing fans are smart enough to know that an undefeated record doesn't automatically make you the best. If that's the case then Calzaghe should be considered one of the top five boxers of all time.
A great work ethic and superior skills are not enough either. You got to have the hunger to fight the best and the motivation to fight for something other than money because the latter will be there automatically when you reach a certain level of success.
As a result, his polar opposite, the humble boxer who despite not having the same pedigree from the beginning has now become the best fighter of his generation. The fighter whose accomplishments does not take a backseat to anyone in the history of the sport and one who not only met all the expectations bestowed upon him, but exceeded them. He is none other than the Congressman Manny Pacquiao.
