Early Friday afternoon, the Miami Dolphins and veteran tight end David Martin have agreed to a contract that brings back Martin only a year after the Fins waived Martin after an off-season injury.
Martin will provide not only depth to the tight end corps, but he will also provide a deep threat for quarterback Chad Henne over the middle. During the 2008 season, Martin was one of the many "X-factors" that got the team over the hump, and into the playoffs.
In '08, Martin caught 31 passes for 440 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also freed up fellow tight end Anthony Fasano, who has a career year as well, and was on the receiving end of 34 completions, for 454 yards, and 7 touchdowns.
Together there is no doubt that Martin, and Fasano make each other better, but what they also do is take up a roster spot for someone else on the roster.
With the addition of Martin, the trio of John Nalbone, Joey Haynos, and Kory Sperry will be competing for one other roster spot. Based on the number of snaps Nalbone has been getting during training camp, my bet is on the second year tight end.
