Carolina was expected to do things this year, maybe even make the playoffs. One thing that has caused them to be the laughing stock of the NFL is injuries and quarterback woes. The Panthers took a risk by drafting Jimmy Clausen in the second round, but I understand their thinking by doing so.
This season Clausen has been nothing but bad this season. He's thrown two touchdowns to seven interceptions this season and a 52.7 completion percentage. That's pretty bad compared to Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford's stats this season.
Now, with Carolina's dismal season they're in great position to draft Andrew Luck from Stanford. I see a lot of similarities of Luck with Ben Roethlisberger. Luck is mobile and has a great throwing arm like Roethlisberger.
Most people are comparing Andrew Luck to Peyton Manning, but I wouldn't go that far just yet. Manning has built the Colts legacy all by himself, so if Andrew Luck can do that with Carolina that would be simply amazing. We'll have to wait and see with Luck his first season.
If Luck is drafted by Carolina they will have to let this current group leave. John Fox has to go and Jimmy Clausen will have to be released or a backup to Luck the rest of his career. You just can't draft a quarterback and let him turn into a backup he will have to start immediatly.
I expect Carolina to say Luck and Clausen would battle for the starting quarterback spot during pre-season, but Luck automaticly will get it. Also, Andrew Luck will probably be the richest quarterback in the NFL, until Peyton Manning gets almost a 200 million dollar contract from the Colts in the off-season. Based on Luck's stats at Stanford this season, he could be a stud in the NFL.
One underrated thing about Andrew Luck is his runnning ablity. He has the same running ability as Ben Roethlisberger. That's mostly why I compare Luck to Roethlisberger when he gets to the NFL.
Steve Smith would surely want Carolina to draft Andrew Luck number one overall. He's been horrible ever since 2008 when Jake Delhomme, Matt Moore, and Jimmy Clausen have made Smith look very bad. Andrew Luck would make Steve Smith possibly a pro bowler again before he retires.
Overall, if Carolina is on the clock for the 2011 NFL Draft they need to draft Andrew Luck. He could revive the Carolina Panthers and their fan base with him being drafted by them. Andrew Luck will be a great quarterback in the NFL, he won't be a bust like Ryan Leaf, Jamarcus Russell, or Brady Quinn. Carolina can't pass up this great quarterback at number one, he's the next face of the NFL.
