Johnathan Loyd chose Oregon over Northwestern and UNLV. This is something of a blow to NU’s hopes of adding a backup point guard to take pressure off of Michael Thompson. The ‘Cats are still in the hunt for combo guard Ben Brust and forward Kevin Noreen, but the instant impact Loyd could have made might have been the most significant. Right now, it is a key time for Alex Marcotullio to work on developing his ability to play point guard. He was a high school point guard who supposedly went toe-to-toe with Kalin Lucas, but he didn’t always look great handling the rock last season. The Wildcats also do have Jeff Ryan who can play the point, but long term it would be better if Marcotullio could show the ability to play that spot.
