Sometimes the inner child in us all comes out to play. That's how I felt tonight at the Fatal 4 Way Pay Per View at Nassau Coliseum. As much as I was there as media, interviewing fans before and after the show (footage to be edited and posted in the very near future!), it's hard not to have child-like excitement when attending a show of this magnitude. It's quite an experience to see the WWE live, and I recommend it to anyone. If you need more proof, let me break down what the experience was like for me and some of the things I saw that may or may not have been noticeable when watching at home.
-We got to the show over an hour before the show started and lines were already crazy long.
-As we prepared to shoot footage along the line, we were told to vacate the area due to not having a "permit to film"........oops!
-Shooting in the parking lot ended up being just as fun. We found some great fans who I will acknowledge in a later article that ranged from men in their 30s to children who probably knew more about the show than some of those older men.
-We wrapped up shooting at about 7:40 to make sure we got to our seats in time for the dark match.
-At about 7:45, it is announced that we'll have a special dark match, though if you've ever been to any live event, you know that there is never NOT a dark match.
-Zack Ryder is out first and gets a huge pop due to being literally down the road from where he grew up. He tried to get heel heat with his promo, and succeeded for the time being. I personally loved the promo, as he talked of working out every day and using spray tan. He is so Jersey Shore and it's awesome.
-Ryder's opponent was MVP who got a HUGE pop coming out. The fans were hot for the show, so I guess the first face to come out was going to benefit from this.
-Ryder gets a huge pop after picking up the win. I know he tried hard to get heat, but he's gotta smile knowing that his home crowd appreciates him.
-The announcers come out after this. Michael Cole gets huge heat, Striker gets a little heat and no cheers, which is sad considering he's FROM NY! and King gets a nice ovation. I don't think people realized that Striker is a local guy, but more on him later.
-Showed open with Vince McMahon which always gets a pop. There's something about seeing a rich man in front of your face....
-Crowd starts chanting Daniel Bryan's name while Vince is talking. This isn't the last time that name would be chanted.....
-Nice continuity with Vince shaking his "chosen one's" hand. Drew came out to decent heat, which was rare on this night, as most heels weren't really booed.
-Kofi got a nice pop coming out, and before I move on, I have to say that the opening pyro, as well as any pyro for superstars was LOUD! You can see in the picture above that we were in the middle of the arena, so we were close enough to the stage to really feel the effects of the pyro.
-Crowd was very hot for this opening contest, as every fall drew a reaction one way or the other.
-Kofi Kingston was sponsored on this night by L.A. Gear.......or at least he must be. The back of his shoes were lighting up like the old school L.A. Gears. It was kind of weird if you ask me.
-A "you can't wrestle" chant broke out. I'm guessing it was geared at Drew, but it's pretty stupid considering Drew is actually a pretty decent worker.
-Crowd popped huge for Teddy when he became ref and stopped the count when Drew was going to win. The pop continued when Matt Hardy appeared out of the crowd. Pop grew even more when Kofi picked up the win.
-As hot as the crowd was for the opening match, that's how dead it was for the Divas match. The only Diva to get any reaction upon entrance was Eve, and it was a small pop.
-Just as her song says, Eve was looking good to me.
-Crowd was completely dead during this match. Not one chant was started about anything.
-Dead silence when Alicia Fox won. I'm not sure if it was shock or indifference. Probably a combination of both.
-Chris Jericho came out to a very big face pop. Either fans realized he was born in New York or they just respect his work. I'm guessing the latter, as the NY crowd basically cheered whoever the hell they wanted, not who the WWE wanted.
-Bourne's pop wasn't nearly as big as any of the other faces. He's starting to get over, but he has work to do.
-Dueling "let's go Jericho" "let's go Evan" chants break out. Jericho's chant is about 5 times louder and Bourne's is 3 octaves higher, as only kids are cheering for him. It was kind of sad actually, because Bourne isn't nearly as cheesy as a Cena or Mysterio yet.
-Bourne did get a pop for the Shooting Star press and a nice cheer for his win. I think the crowd appreciated the solid effort. However, it was definitely a very pro Jericho crowd.
-World Heavyweight title was next. I watched the intros, where they all got cheers. Punk was decently over with the crowd as a face, so by default, Swagger got more heat. If anything, Mysterio got the most due to a few fans trying to boo him through the cheers.
-I decided I was hungry and that Serena went backstage, so this was an opportune time to get some food. I missed a few Big Show slaps from what I understand, but I wasn't devastated.
-Big spot of the match was a double German Suplex by Swagger. Very impressive move.
-Crowd, along with me, thought the chokeslam into the casket was a nice spot, but when Punk ran out of the arena, many hopes were dashed.
-HUGE pop for Mysterio winning the title. I was not part of it, as I am not a fan of the sugarcoated underdog hero.
-Cena promo on screen draws HUGE boos until the kids realize he is getting booed and scream loud to overpower the boos. Finally the crowd respects the promo and gets quiet so we can hear it.
-Miz got a mixed reaction, but I can tell you that my section was definitely cracking up as he rapped his way to the ring.
-Everyone did Miz's catchphrase with it, and I mean everyone.
-R-Truth got a nice pop, though I'm not sure that it outdid Kofi or even MVP. The what's up in the ring was pretty loud though.
-The crowd absolutely died during this match. It moved way too slowly for anyone to maintain a level of excitement. I blame Truth, as Miz was doing all he could to get the crowd into it, but the usual, high flying Truth did nothing from his usual arsenal.
-As dead as the crowd was for the match, they popped big when Miz won. I guess they respect Miz's talents much like Jericho.
-The Harts got a big pop until people realized they weren't Bret, while the Usos got very little reaction.
-I, along with a few around me, remarked that Natalya completely outwrestled anything that happened in the Divas title match. She needs to be a contender, though not as a face, as she'd take the spot of my beloved Eve.
-Tyson Kidd can straight up wrestle. He had a few "wow" moments for the crowd.
-Tamina got a tiny pop when she made her father's hand sign on the top rope, signifying the Superfly Splash. Me and the 10 other people in the arena that noticed were impressed.
-Decent reaction for Harts winning, but boy is Natalya's finisher bad. More on that in the actual review.
-Main event starts at like 10:10 and we begin to realize we are not going to get a show that goes until 11.
-Orton gets a big pop, but I was expecting bigger.
-Edge gets almost as big a pop as Orton as he was cheered as a face the whole time.
-Even Sheamus got a mixed reaction which was freakin weird.
-Cena got the biggest reaction of all and it wasn't close. It started as crazy boos, but then the cheers got so loud to try and drown out the boos that it was almost deafening. I don't get fans. By booing a guy who is a fan favorite, you do realize you are showing that you care about him, thus making it easier for management to continue to justify pushing him. If you don't like him, be silent! It's a lot more effective.
-When Cena got to the ring and did his hat throw and pose, he got a lot of cheers. I guess the booers got tired or something.
-When the match started, the haters were back with a "you can't wrestle" cheer directed at Cena. I hate that cheer, as obviously anyone employed in a wrestling company can in fact wrestle. Perhaps movesets are a bit repetitious, but even those moves have to be properly executed, thus negating that stupid chant.
-There were a lot of dueling Cena chants throughout the match. Usually, "Cena sucks" was louder.
-Best spot which got a great reaction was the double DDT on the ropes from Orton.
-The crowd actually cheered when they saw NXT strike on screen, attacking all the babyfaces. This crowd is very weird, though they are reason enough to make you realize that invasion angles like the original nWo will never work again, because fans aren't willing to have blind hate it seems.
-Crowd didn't know what to think with the commotion of the attack and Sheamus winning the belt.
-Gabriel's 450 splash is quite beautiful in person.
-When NXT chased Sheamus out, that was the end of the PPV feed, but we didn't realize that at all.....
-After probably 5 dead minutes, Cena got up from his attack and cut a vicious promo. He acknowledged the haters and put the mic out to allow the to attack him verbally. He then put over the NXT attack as huge but said that he will continue to fight. I was shocked to hear him call them "sons of bitches" and figured he would be at very least fined for saying that on Pay Per View.
-Even though it wasn't on the show, there were plenty of kids in the audience, so why is it ok for Cena to use that type of language in a promo then but not on the feed? The hypocricy that exists with the product beguiles me sometimes.
-Justin Roberts thanks us for coming and hopes we'll come out to the next show in the near future.
-My buddies and I race to get back to the car to film a post show wrap up, unsure if we will be able to get any more interviews.
-We encounter some passionate fans with "Cena can't wrestle" and "Ultimate Warrior rules" posters. Kind of opposing viewpoints there, given that Warrior was one of the worst workers ever, but they had passion and made for a great interview.
-After wrapping up shooting, we decide to drive over to where the wrestlers come out.
-There is a crowd on one side who have found Matt Striker. We make our way over and end up taking a really great picture with him. Matt was great to all the fans, and even dealt with an obnoxious fan really well by saying he was inappropriate but that he forgave him. I have newfound respect for my fellow New Yorker.
-John Cena comes out and people go nuts. He is not looking great and his people rush him to the trailer, but he does make sure he stops and shakes the military man's hand, as well as a couple of kids. It was pretty cool to get within 5 feet of him though. Dude is chiseled!
-We see Serena in a cheap car. She smiled and waved at me! Probably because she heard me say she's beautiful. Maybe she'll call me.........probably not.
-Some others we caught a glimpse of in their cars were Drew and Sheamus in the same car, Skip Sheffield, Edge in the cube I believe (weird car), Layla, Josh Matthews, and the Hart Dynasty.
-When all the kids and parents made their way to Cena's trailer, we knew it was time to go, as we weren't going to wait around all night just in case he came out. I missed my chance to get a picture when he was 5 feet away, thus I don't deserve a second chance.
-We finally left the parking lot a little before 12 feeling tired but satisfied.
It was a great night and a very enjoyable experience. I will have a full review up soon as well as a reaction piece to my first on location shooting. Keep tuning in for everything having to do with this show and more! Also check the facebook page, MoutoftheSouthShore (I know it's spelled wrong!) for pictures from the event. It was a great experience and something I'd recommend to every wrestling fan. There's nothing like a live show and you just have to experience it for yourself!
