Well, this is why we are in big trouble. With a chance to get a jump on the series with Cardinals, Kyle Kendrick got bombed and the hole only gets deeper.
I'm not going to kill KK for this performance. This is what he is. He doesn't have great stuff so if he gets too close to the heart of the plate, he gets blasted. Amazingly, even after 7 earned runs in 5 innings, his ERA for the year is only 4.82. Not great, but not bad for what amounts to basically our 6th starter. The loss drops him to 5-4 on the season.
At the plate, the Phillies jumped out early to a 3-0 lead but were basically unable to muster much after that. They did bang out 13 hits but only plated 4 runs. Jayson Werth continues to mildly emerge from his pronounced slump reaching base 3 times in 4 plate appearances with 2 hits and a walk. His OBP is .370, he's just not driving in runs, something you need from your number 4 hitter. Ryan Howard knocked in his league leading 74th RBI on the season...he's on track for 130.
The Phils now sit 6 games back of the Braves and are in danger of being totally knocked out of the race. They resume play at 8:15 tonight as Jamie Moyer takes on Chris Carpenter in what could be a total mismatch. Carpenter hasn't been sharp lately so hopefully the Phils can get to him and Moyer can bring home his 10th win on the season.
