Kaberle to Boston

Kaberle

Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli had a very busy day today as the Bruins acquired Tomas Kaberle from Toronto. Chiarelli then quickly made a deal to acquire Rich Peverly and Boris Valabik from Atlanta.

The Bruins gave up Joe Colborne, 1st round pick (Bos) 2011, and a conditional 2nd round pick. Giving up Colborne hurts, but you have to give up something to get something. Colborne is the Bruins top prospect behind Tyler Seguin. The first round pick will probably be a late pick in the first round, and the Bruins still have the Leafs first rounder this season which could be a top five pick. The conditions of the second rounder is if the Bruins make the Stanley Cup Finals or re-sign Kaberle.

My assessment of this is that the Leafs win because Kaberle was not worth this much, but the Bruins really needed a puck moving defenseman like Kaberle. TSN evaluated Kaberle earlier this week, and in their opinions he was worth a second round pick and a B type prospect. So think more like Zach Hamill and a second from that. Still though in my journalistic opinion Bruins fans shouldn’t be too upset because the Bruins desperately needed a Kaberle type player. It was just disappointing to see the Bruins overpay this much if your a Bruins fan... It is essentially two first round picks and a second.

The Bruins sent Blake Wheeler and Mark Stuart to Atlanta for Peverly and Borris Valabik. This move cleared about $2.5 Million in cap space, so it was a nice move by Chiarelli to dump cap and acquire a player like Peverly who is a 50 point player. CSNNE’s Joe Haggerty reported the Bruins would have a little over $1 Million in cap space.

My lines:

Lucic-Krejci-Horton

Marchand-Bergeron-Peverly

Ryder-Seguin-Recchi

Kelly-Campbell-Thornton

-Paille

But the Bruins could scratch Seguin, who has been really picking up his play. It would be a mistake not to play Seguin because he has been really picking it up and needs to play to develop. Also Kelly probably centers the third line, but this is what I would do. I would imagine Seguin shifts to wing on the third of fourth line.

Chara-Kaberle

Boychuk-Siedenberg

Kampfer-McQuaid

-Ference

What the Bruins will actually do could be different. Would not be surprised to see Boychuk or McQuaid scratched.

*Chris Kelly will play tonight in Ottawa.

*Joe Haggerty believes Kaberle will play tonight for Boston. (Not sure if he could run into Visa issues like Kelly did)

*Peverly will not play tonight
