Well, I'm about to head to bed, but I figured I'd give everyone the latest update on John Cena. As of the last writing, I told you that Cena seemed to have suffered a leg injury and no one was sure of the severity. Since then, we've learned differently.
The first to report that Cena's injury was to his hip, not leg, was Jim Ross. He tweeted that Cena suffered a hip pointer, which is a deep bruise to the pelvic bone and muscle. The symptoms for hip pointers can include swelling, possible internal bleeding, and pain from hard breathing and/or laughing. As bad as that may seem, this can actually be viewed as a positive.
Jim Ross described the injury as "day to day", and as we've seen with Cena before, his body seems to heal faster than most. This works out very well, as Cena is likely to continue to appear on Raw, but you can expect that he will not wrestle or do anything too physical in the next couple of weeks as he recovers.
While the injury may NOT be a hip pointer, WWE.com has confirmed that the injury is to Cena's hip. They too have said the injury will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis, so you can expect to be seeing John Cena at next week's Raw.
However, Cena will not be seen at house shows. He was pulled off of tonight's show in Baltimore and was replaced with the Big Show. This will probably be the play for the time being.
It's clear though that this can be seen as very good news for now. Had Cena suffered a major injury, it may have destroyed the possibilities associated with his new storyline with CM Punk. Fans have to be rejoicing over the fact that this feud looks to be continuing. That said, expect Cena's TV role to be mostly promos for the forseeable future with a possible return to the ring at the Royal Rumble. At least, that's my prediction for the moment.
I think we're all glad to hear that Cena should be ok. Here's a clip from the show in Scranton/Wilks Barre showing Cena's speech to the crowd after he suffered the injury. He is upbeat, but he definitely was as unsure as the rest of us when it happened. Let's just be glad that things seem to be working out for the best in this situation.
