Martinsville Speedway for Jeff Gordon could help him climb back into the title hunt.
For Kevin Harvick while its not one of his best tracks it certainly another opportunity to gain points.
Martinsville Speedway is Gordon best track statistically. He has always run well at the Virginia track and said this week he looks forward to coming to this track.
"I always love going to Martinsville - the track seems like a natural fit for my driving style," Gordon said.
As he should love Martinsville Speedway, he has seven wins, seven poles, 23 top-fives and 29 top-10's.
It’s not often Gordon struggles at Martinsville in fact only three times in his career has he finished out side the top 10.
Gordon sits 156 points behind teammate Jimmie Johnson in the standings. A disappointing weekend at Charlotte after alternator problems during the race relegated them to a 23rd place finish.
Gordon and his team are still looking for first win of the season and this weekend is as good as a place as any to do that.
For Harvick, he has quietly positioned himself in striking distance of Johnson and Denny Hamlin.
Martinsville for him is not his best track in the Chase but somehow at the end of the race he finds a way to finish top 10 or top 15.
If he wants to stay in the title picture this weekend he needs to finish right behind Hamlin and Johnson who are sure fire bets to battle for the win on Sunday.
He has no wins and no top five finishes but he has seven top 10 finishes at Martinsville.
Harvick needs a solid finish this weekend if he wants to spoil the party with the top two drivers. He also can’t afford any mistakes this weekend and that means his pit crew needs to be spot on.
Gordon has a big hill to climb to get back into the title hunt but it is not impossible.
Harvick has to find a way to beat Hamlin and Johnson at a track where these two have dominated in recent years.
For both these drivers that is easier said then done.
