Man do the Phils have some fight in them but really, how many injuries can they overcome? Shane Victorino left the game early after staining his oblique. This, on top of Jimmy Rollins already having to miss the game with a bone bruise in his foot.
The pitching tonight wasn't great through the first six innings but it got the job done. Cole was off his game. He threw 108 pitches in only 5 innings, giving up 3 earned runs. The pitches mounted due to 8 strikeouts and 4 walks. David Herndon then came in and gave an earned run and continues to see his ERA on the season rise, although he'd get his first win on the year. Baez, Contreras, and Madson only allowed 1 hit in the final 3 innings.
At the dish, Jayson Werth was the offensive star of the game. Ryan Howard may have produced more, but Werth reached base 4 times in 5 plate appearances, going 2 for 3 and walking twice. His on base percentage reached .383 and he hit home run number 14 on the year. His 2 RBI gave him 54. Now, to the Big Piece. Howard continues to kill the ball getting his 23rd home run on the year and reaching 81 RBI on the year. Cody Ransom also hit a home run, his second.
The Braves lost and all of the sudden the Phillies are only 3.5 games out first place and 2 games out of the wild card, pending the result of the Giants game tonight. Roy Halladay will take on Edwin Jackson tomorrow night at 7:05 as the Phils look for a 7th straight win.
Easily the best soccer celebration ever:
