ISLANDERS TO BRING IN FAMILIAR FACES AS CAMP INVITES
With training camp a week away for the Islanders, it is that time for invites to be handed out. It was reported earlier by Newsdays' Arthur Staple that defenseman Radek Martinek and possibly forward Brad Boyes will join the team on a try-out basis.
While they aren't big name stars each played a valuable part to the teams success last year.
Martinek was in and out of the line-up as an extra defenseman. While he was in the line-up he proved to be much more then a reserve player. His leadership was keen and his shot from the blueline brought a much needed element to the offense.
As for Brad Boyes, it is hard to sit here and say 10 goals is a great feat. However, given that his production the last few years had dipped, scoring 10 goals in a shortened season was a great boost to his confidence.
Before fans start commenting about the fact he only scored 10 goals, think about what he could have had in a full 82 game season. I think he would have reached 15+ goals had they started the season on time. If he makes the team again out of camp his production will be huge in taking the next step forward for this team.
Staple also noted on twitter that as of now the team will not likely bring a veteran goaltender to camp on a try-out basis until camp gets underway. He stated that today and when I tweeted with him the other day. If and when they bring in a goalie a name like Johan Hedberg is a player to keep an open eye for.
#Isles may have a couple familiar veterans in camp next week: D Radek Martinek, who came to camp on tryout in Jan. and signed for 1 year...— Arthur Staple (@StapeNewsday) September 7, 2013
And possibly Brad Boyes, who signed 1-year deal last summer and was 3rd-leading scorer (10-25-35) last season. Surprisingly still an FA.— Arthur Staple (@StapeNewsday) September 7, 2013
No indication #Isles will bring another veteran G to camp. Not to start, at least.— Arthur Staple (@StapeNewsday) September 7, 2013
Stay tuned, hockey is back!
