The fans of the New York Islanders sold out the Nassau Coliseum on opening night, and were full of energy. However, the Islanders were not.
The Islanders were shut out 2-0 by the Florida Panthers. The Islanders were outplayed tonight. They were also very undisciplined. The Islanders took seven penalties, including a fight for Travis Hamonic. Mike Mottau took three penalties alone.
The first Panthers goal came at 16:37 of the first period, when Islanders goalie Al Montoya made a save on a slap shot, but the rebound got behind him. Stephen Weiss was able to get behind Mark Streit to tap home the rebound.
The Panthers second goal came on a five-on-three powerplay with 15 seconds remaining in the first period. Jason Garrison ripped a slap-shot from the point past Montoya.
The Panthers almost went up by three goals, but Josh Bailey made a great defensive play while on the powerplay to save a goal.
Panthers goalie Jose Theodore made 27 saves on 27 shots to get his first shutout of the season.
Montoya made 27 saves on 29 shots.
The Islanders next game will be a matinee event on Monday afternoon against the Minnesotta Wild at 1 p.m.
