Islanders Beat Devils in New Jersey on Controversial Call

Isles beat devils

The New York Islanders finally got their first win away from the Nassau Coliseum today when they beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2, but they got some help from the referees.

It appeared that Zach Parise tied the game at three with about two seconds remaining in the game, but the goal was overturned. Even though it was ruled a goal on the ice, the off-ice officials in Toronto ruled that Parise kicked the puck past Islanders goalie Al Montoya. The Islanders won the faceoff, but lost the puck in the corner. Parise went right to the crease, as did the puck. Montoya tried to glove it, but Parise slashed the puck out of his glove. He then kicked the rebound in with his right skate.

The play was overturned fairly quickly. The no-goal call resulted in a neutral zone faceoff with two seconds left and virtually guaranteed an Islander victory.

Parise said after the game, "I've just watched it, but I'm sorry, I just can't agree with it."

Devils coach Pete DeBoer also said, "I wouldn't consider what I saw a distinct kicking motion, but I don't get to make those calls."

Matt Moulson opened the scoring at 11:28 of the first period when he fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Devils goalie Martin Brodeur. P.A. Parenteau and Milan Jurcina got the assists on that goal.

Adam Larsson of the Devils then tied the game at one at 4:20 of the second period. Larsson walked into the slot and fired a snap shot top shelf over Montoya. Ilya Kovalchuk and Adam Henrique were credited with the assists.

Josh Bailey gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead when he put a wrist shot past Brodeur at 11:59 of the second period. It was Bailey's second goal of the season. Brian Rolston got the assist.

The Devils tied the game at two at 3:59 of the third period after Islanders defenseman Mike Mottau turned the puck over at the Islanders blueline to Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk fed it to Parise who then gave it to Henrique. Henrique walked in on a breakaway and slid the puck under the arm of Montoya.

Michael Grabner closed out the scoring at 5:51 of the third period. The goal came shorthanded when he poked the puck away from Kovalchuk inside the Devils' zone. Grabner had a short breakaway that he finished by firing a wristshot past Brodeur.

Notes:

Al Montoya saved 24 of the 26 shots he faced.

Brodeur saved 23 of 26.
