Is John Riggins Washington Redskins franchise rushing record safe? A year and a half ago I would've said no. Now after seeing RB Clinton Portis get injured again and factoring in all the intangibles I think the record is safe. The record is 7,472 by Riggins and Portis is sitting on 6,792 which is just 680 yards away, but I'm afraid it may be out of reach for Clinton. His body has taken a real pounding over the course of his career and the way he blocks is a big contributor to that. I like Clinton Portis and hate to see him start to go out this way. Portis is 119 yards away from reaching 10,000 for his career. John Riggins finished his NFL career after the 1985 season with 11,352 rushing yards and a Super Bowl MVP!
