The world has gone mad.
In a land where legends that brought one company to bankrupcy are running another, where said legends have a group of nobodies that are supposed to be feared due to that association, where every woman in the company is a bitch because another woman said so, and where networks trust a man for months only to fire him after two appearances, walks a man who is not like the rest. He is for everything that is right and unlike the rest, fans haven't turned on him yet. Donning black, he is not the face of evil, but of all that is right. His white and red facepaint shows not a man fearing what the world will think of his face, but a man who is giving the fans of his company a lost sense of hope. He is a veteran, he is a champion, he is Sting.
While I don't really endorse the idea of having Sting as a champion, mainly because he isn't able to and doesn't have in his contract the need to work house shows, he is a shining light in a sometimes foggy world.
His promos are coherent, fans love to see him, and his character seems to be very real in the sense that he is a man amonst boys and is trying to show them the way to becoming better. By choosing to stay with TNA rather than go to WWE for a short term, hall of fame type deal, I get the feeling that he revels in this role behind the scenes and it simply manifests itself on screen from time to time.
Tonight, Sting was the show for me. His opening promo was solid, and even though I hate the idea of Sting facing Hogan in the future, I've accepted the fact that it's probably going to happen and at least Sting has the ability to make you care a little bit about something that we have no business caring about.
Later on, Sting was set to team with Eric Young. In showing that he actually "gets it", Sting flat out told EY that he needed to stop worrying about comedy. In the context of the match and this story, it was very real and made a ton of sense. I kind of hope Sting works with EY more because I like that he's trying to bring somethign better out of EY. If Young combined his talent with the comedy, he could be a real force in wrestling, so I hope they go that way. If they are, there's no one better to get him there than the Stinger.
Some of you are probably thinking "how can a guy who lost his match" be IMPACT player of the week? Well, pretty easily actually. Should I have picked Gunner who did nothing other than pin someone for 3 seconds? Come on now!
Sting was the star of the show, hands down. He is a legend and in terms of doing everything other than put on a fantastic match, he's still very viable as a wrestling talent. I believe his role should be to work with up and coming talents to teach them the way, not to be the champion, but I'd rather see him with the belt than Anderson. Sting simply can't work great matches anymore and that's ok. He's 52 and shouldn't have to. However, he can have a great role being the guy that young talents need to go through to get to the champion. Plus, he's a great guy to have in the back as all the young talents should aspire to be the talent and the man the Steve Borden personifies.
Tonight, there was no one more fitting of this award than Sting. Got a problem with that? Tweet me @FanVsFanMotSS if you do!
