In a perfect world, things would be simpler. We'd have no war, no poverty, no hunger, and Mickie James as the world's top female wrestler.
Well, at least the world has gotten one thing right so far.
I've often been a defender of women's wrestling as I do believe that these women work incredibly hard at their craft just the way men do. However, until now, I haven't backed that up in my weekly TNA column. Every week, I've picked a male wrestler for IMPACT player of the week, even when the pickings or men were slimmer than Angelina Love. This week, I've decided to finally break the streak.
Really, it was the stellar performance of Mickie James that forced my hand. Granted she has long been my favorite female performer, but tonight she truly shined. In an elimination match, so much can go wrong, but when you have an elite talent in it, it often saves the melee.
Mickie was that talent this week. No cheap backstage talk, no gimmicks, no potions. Mickie simply went out and outperformed everyone else. She fell behind 3-1 in this matchups and STILL found a way to win the match. Granted the story was a bit weird for that to happen, but her wrestling was crisper than I've seen in a while and a fire was in her eyes. It may have to do with her receiving the news of opening for Darius Rucker (formerly of Hootie and the Blowfish), but we may never know.
What I do know is that even taken aesthetics out of it, Mickie is truly an elite women's wrestler. She is the reason I watch the knockouts each and every week and she absolutely deserves this spot this week. Yes, she's beautiful too, but that's just a part of what makes Mickie who she is. She is the best women's wrestler in the game today and a pleasure to watch. While so much will change after Destination X in terms of TNA's stories, one thing that won't is that Mickie will still be the focal point of the Knockouts division, and that's just where she belongs.
Congrats to Mickie for being this week's IMPACT player of the week and for getting the gig with Darius Rucker!
