IMPACT Player Of The Week - 5/5/2011

Robert roode

I'm trying to be patient, but this just wasn't good.

Tonight's Impact was not one of the better efforts from TNA that I have seen as it was a show that lacked flow and sort of just aimlessly went from segment to segment.  On top of that, the segments simply weren't that good.

However, this piece is to isolate and highlight the high points of the night and that's what I'm going to do.

The thing I like most in this business is passion.  I love seeing guys that work hard and show that they love the business more than anything.  On this show, one man decided to step up and show that passion and because of that, he is this week's IMPACT player of the week.

His name is Bobby Roode, and he's one of TNA's longest tenured stars.  From Team Canada to his singles run to Beer Money, he has been an integral part of TNA for 7 years now, yet he's never truly gotten his due.

There are many that feel Roode could be a major player for TNA, but with a cluttered main event picture, it is tough to break through.  What you need to do is stand out and tonight, I believe that Mr. Roode did just that.  The promo he cut was passionate and heartfelt, but mostly importantly, it was coherent.  I love guys who have the ability to speak clearly and concisely in order to get their point across.  Roode clearly has that ability and he showcased it tonight.

While I'm not always a fan of shoot style promos, this one seemed to work.  I sensed real emotion from Roode as he ran down Hogan for all of his shortcomings.  It came off very well and was most certainly the highlight of the show for me.

On a show that was lacking in so many ways for me, this was a golden ray of sunshine in a storm.  While others actually regress, Roode continues to shine when given the opportunity.  Unfortunately, those opportunities have been sporadic and haven't once led to an actual push for this guy.  Perhaps it is due to him being attached to James Storm, so maybe that's something that needs to change.  This guy is a legitimate talent, so titilating us with his potential and then pulling it back from time to time just seems wrong.

That said, when given the ball, Roode runs with it.  He was great tonight and very deserving of the IMPACT player of the week award.  I am honored to give it to him and I hope he gets a big push in the near future.
