How Do the "Pros" Think the Stars Match-Up This Year?
Last week, I previewed the Dallas Stars and how I thought they would perform and ultimately, finish, the season. Being a homer fan of the team I wish to cover professionally may cloud my thinking sometimes so, before we are joined by Dallas Stars beat writer for the Dallas Morning News, Mike Heika and former Dallas Stars goaltender, Marty Turco tomorrow on The Lone Star State of Hockey, I thought I’d take a look and see what the rest of the media world (the guys who actually get paid to cover hockey) had to say and if they thought the Stars 5-year playoff drought would end.
Very little regard for Dallas Stars RT Experts predictions: Who will win it all in 2013-14? http://t.co/o1LSOm6dj4— Tony (@Stars_Insider) September 30, 2013

Of course, Matthew meant the Central, which he also rectified with a later tweet.

That's just a little taste of what the rest of the world thinks of the Dallas Stars as they look to crack the top-8 of the Western Conference for the first time in 5 years. Sure, having missed the playoffs for so long coupled with the fact that there is a new team structure makes it difficult and puzzling why anyone would offer any credit to what the Stars have done. But, when you consider that in each of the 5 years the Stars missed the playoffs, not once did they finish more than 8 points out of the final spot. Why is 8 significant? Because the Toronto Maples Leafs missed the playoffs for NINE straight years.
I accept that hockey is a little more important in Toronto than it is in Dallas, yet a non-traditional hockey town like Dallas misses for just 5 years by a cumulative total of 30 points, and I think the Stars could have signed/traded for Crosby, Malkin, Quick and Datsyuk, and the writers would say the Stars would miss the playoffs.
