We discussed the context surrounding Mark Appel's life altering decision right after the Pirates nabbed him in this year's Rule 4 draft. Now that he has decided to go back to Stanford and we've got some draft data, let's look at what 2013 may bring the righty.

Before we get to the analysis, it should be mentioned that life isn't all about money. I know it's hard to believe, but sometimes there are other factors at play.  It's quite possible that Appel valued his senior year at college so greatly that he required more than $3.8 million to buy his services. It's also possible that he was posturing, weighed the risks and determined that he could earn more money by reentering next year's draft. Only Mark knows.
