The New York Mets (30-32) send out possible Rookie of the Year candidate Dillon Gee (6-0 3.33) to win their first game of the four game series vs the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates are going to send out a possible Comeback Player of the Year, in Charlie Morton (6-2 2.52).

Dillon Gee faced the Pirates, Charlie Morton once this season, and was able to pick up the win with 7 solid innings letting up 3 runs.

On the other hand, Charlie Morton's last start versus the Mets was very shaky, though only allowing 1 run through 6 innings, but allowing 11 hits. He got the no decision.

Dillon Gee has started 8 games this season, winning 6 of them, the other 2, he didn't get the win but the Mets were able to rally late in those games to win those starts as well.

Jose Reyes' major league debut came on this day, June 10, 2003 in Texas.

Jason Bay is sitting another game, trying to clear his head. Bay hasn't faced the Pirates in his career, and will have to wait till Tomorrow. Lucas Duda got the call up, sending Nick Evans back down to Buffalo. Duda has been red hot as of late down in Buffalo, and will start in left field for Bay.

Instead of playing left field, Jason Bay got promoted to left out.

The Mets lead the league in triples (17), looking for more in this series. Through the last 26 days the Mets lead the National League in batting average with .269. However, the Mets have the 2nd fewest at bats in the NL with only 878 in the last 26 games.

Starting the game, Morton was all over the place with his pitches. After Jose Reyes grounded out, Justin Turner got hit by Morton's pitch. Carlos Beltran then walked, and Daniel Murphy reached on base due to a Roger Cedeno error (has the second best fielding percentage in NL). Pagan hit an RBI groundout to first, and the Mets took an early 1-0 lead without hitting the ball to the outfield. The run however, was unearned.

Dillon Gee looked very shaky to start the game. Allowing a Jose Tabata single, Josh Harrison bunt single, and a Andrew McCutchen single, that made the score 1-1. Gee cooled down to retire the next 3 batters to retire the side and leaving the score to 1-1 after 1.

In the top of the 4th inning, Pagan laced a double down the left field line, going the other way. After that, newly called up Lucas Duda crushed a single to center field scoring Pagan. The ball from the center fielder McCutchen went all the way to the backstop, allowing Duda to get to third base. Josh Thole then blooped a single scoring Lucas Duda. Mets were up 3-1 at this point. Tejada then singled to right field. With 2 men on, Gee bunted to first base. With the very slow Thole running, the Pirates got the out at 3rd base for the force. Jose Reyes then hit a liner, one hop to first baseman Lyle Overbay, and was flopped. The play looked like an error, but was called a hit, and Reyes was safe at 1st. With the bases loaded, and Justin Turner up, with a 3-2 count, he hit a 2 run single off Morton's foot, off of Cedeno's glove into left center field to make the score 5-1. Reyes moved to third. With Reyes and Turner on the corners,  Beltran hit a short liner to Matt Diaz. He made a diving grab, and Reyes got home easily to make the score 6-1. Turner stole second, but Murphy grounded out to 3rd base to retire the side. All 9 batters were up in the 4th inning.

After Pagan tripled to start the inning off in the 5th inning, Morton was taken out of the game after pitching 4 innings allowing 6 earned runs on 9 hits while only walking 1 and striking out 1. With Daniel McCutchen relieving Morton, Duda crushed a line drive to left field, it was caught, but that drove in Pagan with the 7th run for the Mets. Thole then hit a single, Tejada walked with Gee up with 1 out. Once again, the Mets can't get a bunt down. Thole, scared he wouldn't make third base quick enough, took a very large lead. While Gee missed another bunt opportunity, Dusty Brown the catcher picked him off. The next pitch, Gee grounded out to the short stop Cedeno to end the inning.

In the 6th inning, with Reyes leading off, he pulled, and roped a line drive home run, his 2nd of the year, and the Mets took a 8-1 lead. Daniel Murphy then hit a liner off the wall, getting a his first triple of the season, but wasn't scored has Pagan flew out to left field.

Dillon Gee pitched 8 solid innings with 104 pitches.

Tim Byrdak came in for the ninth and was able to close the game. Mets won the first game of a 4 game series 8-1.

Dillon Gee got the win, his 7th of the year. The Mets are now 9-0 with Gee on the mound. He bumped his earned run average to 3.05 letting up 1 earned run with 8 hits, walking none, and striking out 5.

Charlie Morton upped his earned run average to 3.08 allowing 6 earned runs in just 4 innings of work. Getting his 3rd loss of the season now 6-3.

The Mets have done this alot, jumping on hot pitchers. They took Jair Jurrjens out with four runs while he was on his hot streak. Last night taking out Gallardo with 4 runs, who was very hot up until that point. Now Morton who struggled against the Mets allowing 5 earned runs through only 4 innings of work.

Lucas Duda looked really good in his first game back. He hit some very sharp line drives, and was able to drive in 2 runs in the game. Manager Terry Collins has already said that Jason Bay will be back for Saturday's game.

Josh Thole has finally got out of his slump. He had a 3 hit game tonight, and has look a lot better at the plate. He has also looked a lot better calling games as well.

The Mets lead the majors in triples (19), thanks to Pagan and Murphy adding their triples tonight.

Dillon Gee has been fantastic this season. He is not been overpowering his pitches, utilizing all his pitches at the right times. His command and control is very good and seems to always get ahead in the count. Never is he scared, but always confident. His change-up is almost fascinating to watch, as he always fools the hitters. Most mostly, hitters never know what is coming from Gee. That is what makes Dillon Gee the pitcher he is, and the leading candidate to win the Rookie of the Year award. Gee leads the Mets starting pitchers in highest run support with 4 runs per start.

Mets now are only 1 game away from .500, getting great pitching, and hitting the ball really well. Every starting position player got at least one hit. The Mets had 13 hits in the game.

Mets all of last season won 5 road trips. Mets have already won 5 road trips and are now 3-1 on their 10 game road trip, needing 2 more wins against the Pirates to beat their road trip wins of last season.

Mets will send R.A. Dickey for Tomorrow night's game, the 2nd game of the series.

Sadly, the Mets didn't gain any ground in the NL East as the Phillies, Braves, and Marlins won their games. They remain 6.5 games out of 1st place.
