Help Me Help You: Roster Space

Jurrjens

This week I am kicking off my Help Me Help You blog. Each Friday I will feature one or two fantasy or baseball related questions which I receive via email at sandlotsabermetrics@gmail.com during the week.

This week, in honor of the fact that I have three position players on the DL in my personal fantasy league, I have chosen to answer two fantasy baseball related questions regarding roster space.

In a 12 team league in which I have two DL spots which starter, either Brett Anderson or Jair Jurrjens, should I keep (Nelson Cruz is filling my other DL slot)?

Personally I liked both of these pitchers coming into the season. I drafted Anderson in one league and narrowly missed out on picking up Jurrjens in the later rounds. With Anderson heading to the DL for a second time with elbow problems, I cannot advise keeping him around. He could end up having Tommy John surgery or at least being shut down for a while. Jurrjens, on the other hand, at least looks to be on the road to recovery. Also his hamstring problems are far less serious and intrusive than Anderson's elbow issues. I would hang on to Cruz and Jurrjens in your DL spots while cutting Anderson loose.

In a non-keeper league, who do you like best for the rest of the year Ted Lilly, Clay Buchholz, or Anibal Sanchez?

This is a difficult question considering I own both Lilly and Buchholz in one of my leagues. Historically Lilly has been the most consistent and reliable and by now he should have fully recovered from his injury. Going forward I would take Lilly's consistency as the number one option, followed by Buchholz due to his tremendous upside. Sanchez is also an intriguing pitcher, but I feel that he has been playing over his head this season. I expect Sanchez to have a slight regression as the season progresses, while Buchholz holds steady and Lilly heats up. Consequently I see Lilly as the number one option, Buchholz as the number two and Sanchez as a distant third potential pitcher.

Feel free to email me at sandlotsabermetrics@gmail.com with fantasy questions to feature in my weekly Help Me Help You blog.
