Recently, Spurs manager Harry Redknapp stated that Manchester United would win their 19th league title by default. According to his statement, he rates this United squad as one of the worst in recent times, and if it weren't for Chelsea and Arsenal's misfirings, the Red Devils wouldn't be anywhere near the top.
As a Manchester United fan myself, I'm inclined to agree with 'arry Redknapp a little. I have seen better squads in years past, when United just ran up and down over everyone in the league. They have struggled to get any results away from Old Trafford, winning only 4 games and losing their last three games.
Even though I can understand where Harry is coming from, I refuse to agree that United are being handed the title. The difference between United and the other clubs is that United struggled early, while Chelsea was playing “playstation football”. When Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham started to struggling, United seem to have finally got some traction.
Another thing that Harry has to remember is that teams will more often than not, save their best games for United. If you saw how West Ham, Chelsea, Liverpool and Wolves played when United was in town, I’m convinced that they could have beaten just about anyone that day. Things aren’t always easy when you’re the team that everyone wants to beat.
Rather than worry about what Manchester United are doing, Harry Redknapp would be better served by trying to make sure that his side earn a Champions League berth next season. I must admit, I’m rather impressed with the how Tottenham has made the most of its opportunity this season, but haven’t been able to carry the same form into league play.
So while this may be the “worst” United squad in years, it’s got to burn that they’re still better than the “best” Spurs squad in years.
