Normally stiff big man Julian Gamble scored seven points in the first half for the Hurricanes, and Rion Brown had nine off the bench on 3 of 3 from beyond the arc.
Mustapha Farrakhan and Sammy Zeglinski each scored seven for the Cavaliers in the first half.
Miami out-rebounded Virginia 23 to 12 in the first half and had eight offensive rebounds.
