Giants Dont Find Offense In Loss; Few Bright Spots
The first pre-season game for the Giants was underway, and for the 1st team offense and defense, it wasn't so pretty.
Though right out of the gate Michael Boley intercepted starting quarterback Jimmy Clausen for a 56 yard touchdown, Jimmy Clausen put together a very nice second drive with help of starting running back DeAngelo Williams. Williams who was injured for most of last season had 2 15+ yard plays. The drive was concluded after a Clausen threw a touchdown pass to his new tight end target Greg Olsen for 18 yards that was a little behind him.
Eli Manning and the 2011 Giants didn't look so good. Manning went 4 for 9. Nicks was targeted 4 of those times and was only able to grab one of them for a 14 yard gain.
Ahmad Bradshaw did have a 16 yard rush that resulted in a 1st down, but was only able to get 5 yards on his other 4 carries on the night.
On the Giant's first drive Manning was able to bring the Giants to Carolina's 37 yard line which resulted in a Lawrence Tynes missed 56 yard field goal.
Cam Newton's first appearance in the NFL came in the second quarter. He also utilized Greg Olsen on two plays, one for a 10 yard gain and one for a 30 yard gain. Newton was able to get inside the 10, but had to settle for a Mare field goal.
With the Panthers up 10-7 the Giants defense pressured defense resulting in a sock by defensive tackle Rocky Bernard. The next play, speedy running back Mike Goodson got hit head first by rookie Tyler Sash for a fumble that was recovered by the Giants' defensive end Alex Hall.
Lawrence Tynes then missed another field goal that was only 37 yards out. Not a good start to his season.
After a three in out by the Panthers, the Giants and backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels were able to put a good drive together to tie the game up after a Lawrence Tynes field goal from 38 yards out.
Dominik Hixon, who missed all of last season had 3 catches for 39 yards on that drive. He looked very good, what he was supposed to be last season.
Cam Newton's final drive of the 2nd quarter was inside 2 minutes (53 seconds). He threw 3 straight completions to get to the Giants 21 yard line, but after that he threw 3 in-completions. They would have to settle for a field goal by Mare, but would take the lead at the half 13-10.
In the start of the fourth quarter, rookie Ryan Perrilloux out of Jacksonville State and LSU threw a bullet to Michael Clayton for 37 yards to get into field goal territory. They weren't able to get anything going after that. With Tynes' 4th opportunity to kick a field goal, James Brewer of the Giants let Sean Ware right up the middle to block Tynes' kick. Ware hit Tynes right in his knee after he got his hands on the ball. Tynes went to the locker room after walking off the field on his own power.
Rookie David Simms from Iowa State had a missed tackle that led to 6 points on a short route from Derek Anderson to Kealoha Pilares for 35 yards down the left field side for a 20-10 lead.
That was the game, 20-10 final score, and the Panthers got the win.
