Update: Thanks to Adrian Dater of the Denver Post, we can now confirm that his cap hit will be at $5.57 million.
The puck has not dropped on the new era of Colorado Avalanche hockey but already things are changing.
Just a few week after signing Matt Duchene to a five year $30 million extension, they have followed up by inking captain Gabriel Landeskog to a seven year extension that will carry him until the 2020-21 season.
We are still waiting on contract details but early reports are of a $5.5 million cap hit. To put it this way, it will be approximately the same cap hit as the extension Dustin Brown signed with the Los Angeles Kings earlier this summer.
Landeskog and Duchene represent the future of the franchise, as well as its face. It is good that the Joe Sakic and the Avs are not wasting any time signing these guys to their extensions. The Ryan O'Reilly standoff and subsequent offer sheet was embarrassing, something the Avs fans do not want to go through again any time soon.
The new era of Avalanche hockey is upon us and it is not wasting any time to get anything done.
