Two former Hawkeye basketball players are getting a new chance in life, albeit on a different continent.

Tyler Smith, who played basketball at the University of Iowa before transferring to Tennessee, appears to be headed over to Turkey to test his luck after settling weapons charges. Smith lost the rest of his college career after pleading guilty to misdemeanor weapons charges in January.

Smith was given two sentences of 11 months, 29 days but was granted judicial diversion. As a result of the judgeâs ruling, Smith did not have to serve jail time, assuming he steers clear of any legal issues over the next two years.

Smithâs agent, Jared Karnes, said Turkish team Bornova was willing to sign the troubled player to replace injured star Kedrick Brown.
