They say you learn something new every day. Today, I learned that in life sometimes, you just have to go with the flow.
As I sat by my computer at about 7:45, I was prepared to get a call from Dennis Farrell saying "here's how the show is going to go, let's do it!" That call never came.
Unfortunately, Dennis ran into some technical problems that could not be resolved, leaving us in quite a bind. With Petey Williams scheduled to call in at 8:15, it was either postpone the show and hope he could do it on Friday, or take the plunge and host the show myself despite having much less radio experience than my counterpart. The only thought in my mind at this point was "don't disappoint the athlete", so I told Dennis that I'd take the chance and go it alone. It's times like these that I'm thankful to be stupid enough to take these risks.
I learned the basics of the switchboard in a matter of minutes and was told "ok, go for it". At that point, you are just flying by the seat of your pants and in my case, you are thrown right into the fire.
Literally 2 minutes into the show, Petey Williams called in. I was prepared to ask him a few things but figured Dennis would have his own questions as well. Now flying solo, the entire interview was in my hands. Luckily, Petey was incredibly cool and gave me over and hour of his time. That's no small feat considering it limited the amount of time I had to spend coming up with a solo show on the fly. I can't thank Petey enough, but I will sure try. Thanks again Petey!
