In an interview with the Spanish News Agency EFE (and published) in the US Latin TV Station Univision, Fernando Torres explained his reason for leaving Liverpool FC (the Reds) and signing with Chelsea FC (the Blues).
Torres states that while grateful to the Reds, he was told that "the club needed time" by the new owners.
Torres started to lose faith in the Reds. The final straw was when Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano left the Reds for better opportunities.
Torres pinned his hopes on a move to Chelsea during the January Transfer Window of 2011. It was a move that happened and Torres felt happy at the opportunity.
He went on to thank Chelsea for giving him the opportunity to play and expand his football horizons.
Torres was asked about his defeat (and that of the Blues) before the Reds. His response was that he felt "surreal" when playing against his former teammates.
He commented about the negative reaction from the Reds (including Steven Gerrard) before the beginning of the match. He also elaborated aout the rejection from Red Fans as well.
Torres expressed hope that his former fans will understand. At the present time, Liverpool supporters have been burning shirts and other Torres souvenirs.
He is expressing hope that there could be more games to be won as well as the UEFA Champion League.
It is hoped that the healing process can begin and that Torres continues his progress with the Blues.
