At the beginning of the season out of the four Richard Childress Racing cars, Paul Menard was the last driver many picked to make the Chase.
We are now four races into the season and Menard is sitting fifth in the standings and is the highest running RCR car.
While most are surprised at his early fast start Menard isn’t as he said earlier this week, he feels everything is in place for him and his team.
His worse finish this season was 17th at Phoenix and Sunday he scored his highest finish at BMS.
“In the past, without getting into details, yes, we’ve had issues with that. We’ve brought it to the attention to the people that mattered, and it kind of seemed like it fell on deaf ears sometimes, other times it seemed like they cared. Richard cares. Richard wants the No. 27 team to succeed. He’s very personally invested in it and it’s cool to be a part of.”
Menard finished fifth at BMS and that was running on seven cylinders halfway through the race.
Menard has never really found consistency on his previous teams to run top 10 week to week. With this new team and organization we are suddenly seeing the driver many expected a few years ago.
Menard after the race credited his crew chief and his team for his solid start.
“Testament to Slugger, RCR uh there is a lot of talent up there. Slugger has built a helluva a race team and just having a lot of fun.”
Yes, Menard should be having fun this season. He has outrun Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer and Jeff Burton early on this season.
Menard seems to have found a comfort with RCR and the people around him and in racing you are only as good as the people around you.
The key for Menard and his team will be not getting complacent and with owner Richard Childress behind him, don’t expect a letdown anytime soon.
