Here we are, just a couple of hour from Extreme Rules 2011 and I feel less than extreme.
I've been thinking this for a few days now and I'm not sure what to make of it. On one hand, I don't mind the concept of Extreme Rules. Given that this Pay Per View is generally a continuation of feuds from Wrestlemania, the objective with it is to up the ante so the matches go from showdown of stars to pure brutality. This year, I'm just not as sold on it.
That's not to say that I'm going to be disappointed when total bloodshed on this show pales in comparison to Ric Flair's blood loss on a typical Impact broadcast, but I feel like the idea of this show being Extreme just wasn't sold as much this year.
Take the main event cage match for instance. Why was there not a tag match pitting Cena and Morrison against Truth and Miz? Surely this would have helped Truth's heel turn as well as garnered interest in the match stipulation by showing how brutal steel can be. You also could have showcased Morrison's athleticism, telling fans that they need to buy the Pay Per View in order to see Morrison next awe-inspiring move. As it stands, the main event is just kind of.........there.
Though all the feuds have seen TV time, the idea of them going Extreme isn't there for me. Again, I'm not looking for an ECW type extreme show. I've never been into mindless violence and weapon usage that lacked any sort of psychology. Some may be in to that, but I've never been one of those people. I am someone that would like to see feuds get so hate-filled that these Extreme match stipulations consume them. I want this show to be what it is designed to be, less technical and more brutal.
We may get that tonight, but I am not impressed with the build. Even if we get a great show, I would say for future Extreme Rules shows, you have to promote the idea more. I'm sure the opening video package will be awesome and get us all in the mood, but we should be feeling that weeks in advance. All I'm asking is to up the writing just a little bit, WWE so that it actually pushes your Pay Per View. Is that so much to ask?
Remember, Rate the Booking will be coming after the show so look out for that in the next 24 hours!
