This season has been a somewhat up and down year for the Cowboys. Despite the struggles at times on defense, the team is right where they want to be late in the season and that's controlling their own destiny. The vibe around most of the Cowboys fan-base is optimistic that this can finally be the Cowboys year. Some think that another so called "December swoon" will hurt the team again. I personally don't think that's the case because the 2013-14 Cowboys are mentally tougher than the teams in years past and more talented. Obviously being last in the NFL in total defense (32nd) is a bad thing but i do see improvement. Guys are starting to gain an understanding of their roles in Cowboys Defensive Coordinator Monte Kiffin's Tampa 2.

The defense will get even better with Sean Lee returning for next Monday's game against the Bears. The offense needs to be a bit more consistent as well. That consistency will come if they don't abandon the running game, stay balanced on offense and keep Romo's pass attempts around 22 to 24 a game. In December and January, the running game is needed now more than ever. DeMarco Murray needs to stay healthy and get his carries for the Cowboys to make a deep playoff run this season. The team also needs Miles Austin to turn back the clock and play like the guy that gave defenses fits. The window for the Cowboys to make a run this season is wider than it has been in years.

The NFC East division is the Cowboys division to win. They are 4-0 in the division beating the Giants twice and beating both the Redskins and Eagles once. This roster is one of if not the most talented in the entire NFL. The team understands that mental toughness is needed to bring a 6th Vince Lombardi Trophy back to Dallas. They also have a realistic shot at getting the NFC's #2 seed as well with the Saints playing the Panthers twice two of the next three weeks. When the Cowboys are clicking on all cylinders, no team will want to play them come playoff time. They all have a big chip on their shoulders entering December for the stretch run. This team is better prepared and finding ways to win close football games. Tony Romo leading game winning drives this season against the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants is huge for the team. Those games respectively, have helped the team's confidence grow. In the past, the Cowboys would have found a way to lose those games but they have learned how to grind out wins when they need to. I truly sense that this team has learned from past disappointments and is ready to make that run that Cowboys Nation has been waiting years for.
