If you tuned into Raw tonight, you saw a lot of things. You saw C.M. Punk return to Raw, you saw a live "negotiation" seassion between Punk and Vince McMahon, you saw Big Show, Mark Henry, and Drew McIntyre take a huge fall, and you saw Alberto Del Rio annihilate the other Money In The Bank competitors with a ladder. What you didn't see was a certain diminutive Mexican superstar named Rey Mysterio.
Storyline reasoning aside, it was especially odd not to see Rey on the Raw the day before his DVD release. One would think this would be an opportunity to plug the DVD somehow. Yes, I know they plugged it anyway, but having the superstar there would have helped more.
Still, WWE made it known that Rey's DVD is coming out tomorrow, but should you buy it? Whelp, now's the time I help you make that all important decision.
If you liked Shawn Michaels' latest DVD, you'll probably like this one. Done as a sit down interview, Matt Striker talked to Rey about everything from opponents to tattoos. Of course, these questions are sprinkled in with chronicling Rey's career, but from my perspective, it was interesting throughout. I'm not a huge Rey fan and I found the interview to be informative and a great listen. Matt Striker is surprisingly good at this sort of thing and it really made you care about Rey they guy (no, not Ray Guy the punter).
After every couple of questions, you got a couple of matches, the majority of which are from his WWE tenure. The last Rey DVD had more WCW and older stuff, so this one focused more on his WWE matches with a few older ones to lead in to the WWE stuff. I'm not one to judge whether one match deserves to be on a DVD over another, so I won't criticize any of the choices. The matches on the DVD are just fine and every single one is pretty fun to watch. Granted, Rey's style is fun to watch, so how can you go wrong?
I'm starting to debate which DVD format I like more, the documentary style or the sit-down interview style. Both have ups and downs, but this DVD has me leaning towards that latter. It's one thing to make HBK interesting because I'm a big fan of his, but to keep me compelled with Rey Mysterio? This might be a soild formula.
I would definitely recommend watching this one. As someone who doesn't like Rey, I can tell you that it's well worth it, even if you aren't his biggest fan. You'll certainly respect the hell out of him after it and will definitely know a lot more about him in general. It's a few hours of your life, but hours that are well worth it. Go out tomorrow morning and pick it up. You will not regret it!
