Draft Eligible 3 Stars - OHL - For Week Ending February 5th, 2012
Here are your draft eligible 3 stars from the Ontario Hockey League as selected by a panel of broadcasters, OHL bloggers and independent scouts. To be eligible, players must be eligible for the 2012 NHL entry draft for the first time.
1st Star - Nathan Pancel - Sudbury Wolves : For the second consecutive week, Pancel is our first star. Last week, Pancel scored 5 goals in 3 games to earn the honors and this week he returned the favor to his teammates by registering 5 assists in 3 games. The 5'10, 182 pound winger started the week with 2 assists in a humbling 7-3 loss to the Soo Greyhounds. He followed that with another two assist effort in an 8-4 victory over the Peterborough Petes. He ended the week with another assist in a 3-1 victory over the stingy Brampton Battalion. Pancel also finished the week a plus 5.
2nd Star - Scott Laughton - Oshawa Generals : Laughton came into the season as a highly touted two way player. And while his defensive game has been more than solid all season, his offense has been at the forefront after a slow start. The 6'1, 180 pound center contributed a goal and 3 assists and was a plus 4 in to games for the Generals. He had 2 helpers on Oshwa's lone goals in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Eastern Conference leading Ottawa 67's. He followed that up 2 nights later with a goal and an assist - on the game winner - in a 4-2 victory over the Guelph Storm. Laughton has now moved into the group of draft eligible leaders in assists and points. He has 13 goals and 26 assists on the season.
3rd Star - Nick Ebert - Windsor Spitfires : It's been a roller coaster ride of sorts this season for Ebert. We've seen him drop on virtually all the rankings. but Ebert has come alive offensively scoring a goal and adding 10 assists in his last 11 games. His 4 assists and plus 3 in 3 games for the Spitfires was enough to be named our third star. His 3 assist effort - including the game winner - helped the Spitfires defeat the Owen Sound Attack 6-5 in overtime. He was held off the scoresheet, as most of the Spitfires were, in a 5-1 loss to the powerful Plymouth Whalers. He ended the week with an assist and was a plus 3 in a 5-3 win over the Mississauga St Mike Majors. Ebert could be worth keeping an eye on to see if he can rebound from his poor start.
