The Miami Dolphins defense performed admirably this past Sunday against the high-octane Minnesota Vikings offense, featuring Brett Favre and Adrian Peterson.
While Favre did not do much to help his team win the game, it was Peterson who put the Vikes in the position to come back from a 14-0 deficit, and take the lead in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter.
Oh yeah, the main reason for Favre's ineffectiveness was the superb play of veteran corner Jason Allen. Yes, the same Jason Allen we all thought would be declared a bust, and cut from the team this year. The same Jason Allen who we all thought would never see the playing field as a starter again in his career.
Well, Allen has proved all of his doubters wrong so far this season, in shutting down Buffalo Bills receiver Lee Evans, and intercepting Favre what should have been three times, but one was called back for a defensive holding penalty. Allen also contributed 11 tackles to help the cause.
It was the same superb play, and outstanding coverage that will earn Allen the honor of being Playoff Bound Sports Co-Player of the Game this week.
And the only reason that we are naming two players is because there was someone else on the defense who played a key role in shutting down the Vikings.
The other player that stood out to me was cornerback Vontae Davis. Davis was simply all over the field. He had one of the most acrobatic and amazing interceptions I have ever seen in my life, and was roaming the field like a Pro-Bowler.
Davis had 6 tackles, one interception, and two passes defensed. And one of those tackles helped stop Peterson on a crucial 4th-and Goal play on the 1 yard line. AP was initially stopped by linebacker Karlos Dansby, but was unable to break the tackle after Davis swooped in to garner the tackle.
Without the play of our starting cornerback tandem, the Fins would not have won this game, plain and simple. They performed lights out the whole game, and should be commended for it. Favre even went so far as to praise Vontae as one of the best unknown corners in the league!
The sky is the limit for this group, the only question is whether or not they can keep this high level of play up over the course of the whole season.
Congrats on a great game guys!
