Last night in the process of officially waiving Rasheed Wallace the Boston Celtics opened up one final roster spot. The debate currently taking place on Twitter is whether or not the C's should look to fill that spot ASAP with a guy like Larry Hughes or Delonte West. No matter what they do one thing is shaping up to be for certain - Brian Scalabrine will not be in a Celtics uniform next season.
With all the options out there, and the Celtics need for a wingman rather than a big, it seems as though Scal's days in Boston are over... as a player. During yesterday's press conference to introduce Shaquille O'Neal, head coach Doc Rivers also spoke out about the possibility of bringing Scal back.
“He’s as unselfish of a player as I’ve ever coached. I want him around, I can tell you that,” Rivers said. “In a playing role, if not, in another role. I just think there’s certain people that you hold onto and he’s one of them. So we’re going to try to figure that out.”
If Scal doesn't wind up signing a deal with another NBA squad there will be a "decision" for him to make. Does he want to go overseas to finish out his basketball career, or stay in Boston to take on a Tyronn Lue type role?
After seeing Scal play one on one with Rondo on multiple occasions before games last season I would imagine Scal would embrace the role. After all, he wouldn't be doing much less than he did last season.
P.S That isn't bashing Scal. What he did last season did help the team, just not in a way that showed on the court. During practices and even before games he did a lot to help the team become better.
