Darin Ruf showed up for work at Coca-Cola Park Tuesday and was told to head for Philadelphia. Ruf, who has been swinging a hot bat for Lehigh Valley, takes the place of John Mayberry Jr., who was placed on the 15-day DL.
Darin Ruf seems to be getting his swing back since coming off the DL. Ruf missed a little over a month with a knee laceration and wrist fracture after crashing into the fence at Coca-Cola Park in early June. Over the last ten games, Ruf has hit safely in nine of them, batting .308 (12-for-39). The only part of Ruf's swing that hasn't returned has been his power. Ruf hasn't homered since his return from the DL.
Mayberry had been mentioned as a possible trade target for some teams seeking help off the bench. At one time, both the Yankees and Red Sox were thought to have interest in Mayberry.
In other transaction news from Tuesday, Koyie Hill accepted his assignment to Lehigh Valley and right-hander Tyler Knigge was promoted back to Lehigh Valley. Knigge spent six weeks with Lehigh Valley and was sent to Reading on July 17th. With Lehigh Valley, Knigge is 1-2 with a 6.23 ERA in 15 relief appearances. The IronPigs also placed two pitchers on the DL Tuesday. Starter Jason Marquis (1-0, 2.22) is down with a right oblique strain, while reliever B.J. Rosenberg (2-1, 5.09) has a left hip strain. Both were placed on the 7-day DL.
