After 19 days of harsh competition, the Czech Republic faced off against Russia in the IIHF 2010 World Championship. Russia was highly favored to win the gold medal for the third year in a row, but in a tournament where the unlike became possible, the Czech Republic earned top honors. From the first match on out, one could tell that this year's IIHF tournament would hold plenty of surprises and upsets. In Gelsenkirchen, Germany, the surprises began. In front of an IIHF and world record crowd of 77,803 onlookers, Germany defeated the USA 2-1 in overtime.
