When Rajon Rondo made the choice to tryout for Team USA this summer, many probably thought he would be a lock to make the team. Out of all the guards that choose to play for Team USA, Rondo was the most talented NBA player. Unfortunately, NBA talent doesn't exactly convert over to international talent and Rajon Rondo is worried he may be the man left off the 12-man World Championship roster.
Rajon Rondo thinks he's on the Bubble
Somebody is going to get cut from Team USA after Wednesday night's exhibition game against Greece, and Rajon Rondo has no illusions about where he stands.
"I think I'm on the bubble," Rondo said Tuesday. "Just looking at the obvious -- I got a DNP last game. That pretty much speaks for itself."
After losing his job as the starting point guard to Derrick Rose last weekend in Madrid, Rondo's stock has fallen to the point where it now appears he is third on the point guard depth chart behind Rose and Russell Westbrook.
It's hard to believe that Coach K would go with a guy like Stephen Curry or Eric Gordon over Rondo, but the style of international play may suit a guy like Curry or Gordan better than Rondo. As far as the DNP goes, that should have nothing to do with whether or not Rondo does make the team. Coach K said himself that he gave Rondo and Danny Granger a break in the game against Spain so that he could see what some of the other guys could offer.
When it comes down to it I'm still a believer that Rondo will make the team. He's the best defensive guard on the roster and he can do things with a basketball that many guys on that team could only dream about. The only thing that could possibly hold Rondo back is his shooting. If he does get cut because of that reason we can only hope he will be more motivated than ever to get in the gym and continue to work on his shot.
