Ashley Young could be set to pair up with England flyer Aaron Lennon on Tottenham Hotspur's flanks next season, according to several leading British press associatons.
Villa manager Martin O'Neill sensationally resigned this afternoon following talks with Aston Villa's American chairman Randy Lerner. It is thought the Irishman was frustrated by the prospect of more of his best players leaving without being adequately replaced - as was the case with midfielder Gareth Barry.
With James Milner on the verge of a £25 million move to Arab-backed Manchester City, Lerner could not guarantee O'Neill that he could use the same money to reinforce an already depleted squad.
Moreover, with other transfer bids failing to come to fruition, Spurs have today signalled their intention to bring in England winger Ashley Young in a deal which could be worth approximately £16 million ($23 million).
This seems a strange move given Tottenham's wealth of wide options. With Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale so impressive over the past twelve months and Mexican youngster Giovani Dos Santos shining at the World Cup, there seem to be more pressing needs in the squad - namely a left-back and cover in central defence.
O'Neill's departure may actually throw City's Milner deal into doubt, as Stephen Ireland cannot be too happy to join a club with no manager. He would surely have cited working with respected fellow Irishman O'Neill as one of his reasons behind the potential switch.
Elsewhere, it is thought that Spurs could make a last-minute move for £10 million-rated Nice striker Loic Remy, who also interests Liverpool and West Ham.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Spurs assistant coach Joe Jordan seemed to hint that the market could kick into motion in the coming weeks. Let the (transfer) games begin!
