Chicago Bulls: "Grandmama" Larry Johnson wants to coach
Some of you might be wondering who the hell is Grandmama but if you have graduated high school or older then you may vaguely remember those awesome Converse commericals featuring Larry Johnson dressed in drag.
There once was an old lady who lived in a shoe....
Johnson,41, has expressed interest in joining the Chicago Bulls coaching staff. LJ as he was also known played 10 years in the NBA splitting his time evenly between the Charlotte Hornets, yeah the Hornets used to play there, and the New York Knicks. Johnson has no previous coaching experience and has not been involved with any NBA team since his retirement after the 2000-2001 season. He did however have interest in returning to the Knicks in a "leadership" role during the summer of 2007.
Larry was forced to retire due to cronic injury problems. During his time in Charlotte he was an explosive player averaging near 20 points and close to 10 rebounds a year while teaming with Alonzo Mourning and point guard Muggsy Bogues. Take away his third year in the league, where he played in 51 games, he played in nearly every game only missing two games in those four years.
However after he was traded to New York is really when the injuries starting to catch up with him. He only topped 70 games twice and his numbers dropped nearly every year during hs time with the Knicks. He finished his career averaging 16.2 points and 7.5 rebounds which really shows just how good he was in Charlotte and how bad things were in New York considering he never averaged over 16 points or 6 rebounds during those five seasons.
You might be asking yourself why would Johnson want to join the Bulls. He never played here, has no ties to the area but there is one connection. During his time with the Knicks current Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau was an assistant on Jeff Van Gundy's staff. Thibs has expressed filling the final spot on the coaching staff with an explayer.
I would be a big fan of this move. I think Johnson could provide a good resource to Taj Gibson, Joakim Noah and Derick Rose. Also another big reason would be can't you see Noah jumping at the chance to fill the "Grandmama" role.
