The injury bug is hitting the Red Sox hard so far this season. With both Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek placed on the disabled list the Red Sox needed to make a move to acquire a catcher. The Sox went with a familiar face acquiring Kevin Cash from the Houston Astros.

Cash became Wakefield’s personal catcher in 2007 and left after the 2008 season. Cash was signed in the 2009 off-season by the New York Yankees.

“It is usually tough changing teams in the middle of the season,” said Red Sox catcher Kevin Cash.

“Coming to this club, and knowing the bulk of the guys makes it pretty easy, I walked in and I started getting yelled at right away, it was like I hadn’t left,” said Cash.

Cash is happy to be back in a Red Sox uniform, and in a familiar environment.

Until Victor Martinez comes off the disabled list Cash is expected catch Tim Wakefield the majority of the time. Depending on when Varitek comes back he may spare Victor Martinez on days Wakefield pitches.

ESPN reported that Varitek is expected to miss about six weeks due a broken foot.

Varitek was playing catch on his knees before yesterday’s match-up with Baltimore.

In the mean time Martinez should be able to come back at some point, then the decision is between Kevin Cash and Gustavo Molina as the back-up catcher.

“At times it can be an adventure,” said Cash about catching Tim Wakefield.

Catching a knuckleballer is one of the most challenging things for a catcher.

Jason Varitek still does not feel comfortable catching Wakefield despite them being the longest tenured Red Sox players on the roster.

“The other night he had a great knuckle ball but he was around the plate the entire night, so it makes my job easier knowing that I don’t have to defend that one that gets away,” said Cash talking about Wakefield’s start against the Orioles on July 2nd.

“I have definitely had my share of adventure days,” said Cash.
