Carl Edwards won a wild race at Dover International Speedway today in what was a long, and wet day in the first state.
The race started about an hour late because of a rain storm that lasted all morning. There was another storm that rolled in with about 55 laps left that delayed the race for about 28 minutes.
You just had a feeling that it was going to be a crazy race right from the start when Donnie Nuenberger got into a hard wreck in turn three on the first lap of the race. And it was indeed crazy.
It seemed like today would be the day that a Nationwide Series regular would finally break through and get a win. Ricky Stenhouse Jr had a very strong car and it showed when he led an early portion of the race. When the rain came back, Josh Wise and his team took a chance and stayed out to try to win it. Unfortunately for Wise and the whole 7 car team, the rain stopped and the race resumed.
Midway through the race Alex Kennedy got loose in turn 2 and smashed the inside wall. About thrity seconds late Kennedy tried to drive the car back to the garage. But the car had no steering and drove straight up the track and right into Kevin Swindell in the 16 Roush Ford. The contact destroyed both cars. Swindell had replaced Trevor Bayne in the 16 for this race because Bayne is still not cleared to race.
Carl Edwards was on cruise control late in the race when the caution came out with four laps to go for a spin by Michael Annett on the frontstretch. This was when the race really got crazy.
The race would go to a green-white-checkered, but the restart was delayed when Ryan Truex ran out of gas and stalled outside of turn 2. On the restart Jeremy Clements ran out of gas and came to a stop right outside of pit road bringing the caution back out and resulting in a second attempt at a green-white-checkered. The restart was delayed twice for two cars running out of gas, and saw multiple drivers including Edwards running on the apron to keep fuel flowing to the engine of the car.
Joey Logano restarted outside of Edwards and held strong through turns 1 and 2 and down the backstretch. When they went into turn 3, Edwards got loose and got right behind Logano's left rear corner resulting in Logano getting loose as well. Logano ended up smashing the wall and bouncing down the track right into Clint Bowyer. Bowyer's car rode up the side of Logano's and almost rolled over. Steven Wallace, Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, and Aric Almirola were all involved as well.
The caution immediately came out and Edwards was named the winner because he was in the lead at the last scoring loop.
It was a crazy finish to an absolutely crazy race at the Monster Mile.
