Remember the time when Filipino boxers were just hoping to be able to fight abroad. Now Filipino boxers are not only receiving more chances to fight abroad, but a number of them are becoming headliners.
This week alone Filipino boxing fans have been treated to great knockouts by their fellow countrymen in Mercito Gesta and Nonito Donaire Jr, both of whom headlined their respective fight cards.
Now Ana Julaton will try to keep the winning streak alive this Friday when she faces Franchesca Alcanter in the 'Return of the Hurricane' event at Craneway Pavillion in Richmond, CA.
A certified main attraction and regarded as one of the best fighters in women boxing, Ana Julaton earned her success and reputation by taking the road less taken. Despite having only ten fights under her belt, she has already fought some of the best women boxers in the game such as Maria Villalobos, Kelly Jeffries, Lisa Brown and Donna Biggers
Now she is facing Franchesca Alcanter, a sturdy veteran with a solid punch and ability to box from the outside. In her last fight, Alcanter faced Ina Menzer, who was then undefeated and considered by many as probably the best woman boxer. Alcanter lost the match but was able to last the distance with the German sensation. No doubt, Alcanter is a solid opponent for Ana Julaton.
However, it should be another win for Julaton since Alcanter probably does not have the athleticism and hand speed to keep away from Julaton's consistent attacks and combinations. In addition, Julaton has been lucky to have been trained by respectable trainers such as Nonito Donaire Sr and Freddie Roach, so her superior technical skills and ring generalship will be a major factor in the fight.
So don't miss this fight, if you are in the bay area. You don't have to be a boxing fan to enjoy this event either as it will consist of performances by artists such as Sway Penala, formerly of DNH, Youtube sensation AJ Raphael, and Nump Trump.
The event will also include Bruno Escalante another up and coming Filipino boxing prospect and a few kickboxing matches.
And for those Filipinos in the Philippines, don't worry because the event will be shown by TV5 locally . Also, commentating on the fight will be Glenn Donaire and Dennis 'DSource' Guillermo. For those who may not be familiar with Guillermo, he is probably the most followed young Filipino boxing writer, so it will be a great chance for his followers to see him in action as he commentates for the first time.
