While many fans were dissapointed when it was announced that Donaire and Montiel were set to fight other opponents, their fans might not have to wait too long for the long awaited fight between the two.
In the press conference of the Chavez vs Gomez fight, Bob Arum revealed his plans to pit the two fighters in February of next year, if both come out victorious in their respective fights.
In addition, the plan is for the fight to be shown in HBO, which will certainly be a great way for Nonito to display his skills to a wider audience. Nonito certainly deserves it since he is one of the top pound for pound fighters in the sport and has constantly shown the hunger to fight the best
Arum also acknowledged that the fight between the two is what the fans have been clamoring for and when will it happen is often one of the questions he is asked.
But he also clarified that the fight with Volodymyr Syndorenko, is for Donaire to test the waters at the bantam weight division, where the latter has not fought since early in his career. Sydorenko is definitely a good opponent for Donaire to test his skills and see how he might be able to compete against some of the top fighters in the division.
Sydorenko is a former WBA bantamweight champion and won the bronze at the 2000 Olympics. No doubt, he is the most accomplished boxer that Nonito has faced since Darchinyan.
But what makes Nonito's fight against Sydorenko more interesting is the fact that the latter will be trained by Freddie Roach. Freddie Roach is one of the best trainers as far as analyzing a fighter's weaknesses and putting up a game plan to exploit them.
Sure, Sydorenko might be on the downside of his career since he has lost in two of his last three fights. But those losses were against Anselmo Moreno, who is one one of the best fighters in the division. Besides Freddie Roach is a trainer who is known to have resurrected a few boxers' careers such as Khan and Toney.
So while Nonito might not have gotten Montiel, he might still have a tough fight on the way. However, with the Montiel fight seemingly on the horizon, Nonito will no doubt be fully prepared for this fight and with his combination of superior physical gifts and skills, there are still no reasons for him not to come out victorious, even if Freddie Roach is on the other side of the corner.
