If you have no idea what Blue Mountain State is you are missing out. It is a show on Spike TV in it's second season about a power house Midwest College with the colors of Boise State. Most weeks there is very little to cover besides beer, girls and regular college, guy, football stuff but this week they took a crack at the pay for play issue.
College football is big business and players don't receive any payment. Agents are all trying to get their hooks into players early. Reggie Bush lost a Heisman because of it and Heisman hopeful Cam Newton is now being accused of receiving cash.
Episode starts with the players attending a party at the coach's house then being asked to pay $40 to pay back coach so they don't break any NCAA rules. This causes the senior star linebacker and new freshman QB to enlist the services of backup by choice QB to be their go between with the agents. Oh also they take fun of the movie Rudy the whole time with an annoying little punk practice squad kid who just keeps quoting the movie. He even wears Rudy's #45 but more to him later.
So Alex's plan is to be the go between with the agents and put everything in Sammy, the mascot's name. Things get out of hand when the QB and linebacker start trying to outdo each other with the swag they can get from the agents. Alex refuses to have the guys sign any paperwork so it nice and clean but one of the agents is smart enough to go for the much dumber Sammy, who takes over the operation. Sammy has them signing everything telling them not to bother reading it is just proof of delivery. It eventually gets to the coach who has a "nice" talk with Sammy with Alex there as well with him telling Alex they are going to clean this up.
Alex hatches a plan to clean this up and take care of another problem. While all of this is going on Coach Daniels is getting pressure from Rudy's dad to let him dress by bribing and blackmailing him telling him they know about the players and agents and will go to the press. Bring in Alex's plan to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Coach Daniels allows Rudy to not only dress but start but before he knows it he is being named the fall guy for the pay for play agent scheme and the team takes care of the agents to make sure this never happens again.
The way this episode goes is a lot closer to the truth then you might think. The NFL & NCAA really need to do something to fix this but also someone needs to watch these colleges on what they might be giving to get recruits to committ. I highly recommend this show and don't think it gets enough press since my brother only just found out about it a few weeks ago. It came on the air last year about the same time as The League. if you have Netflix you can stream the whole first season and catch up quick.
