The Chicago Blackhawks make their first round of cuts Monday, leading up to their first preseason game. They released five players while reassigning four other players.

They released forwards Wade Brookbank, brother of Sheldon Brookbank, Pat Mullane and defensemen Joe Gleason, Jared Nightingale, and Bobby Shea. Mullane was with the Hawks during prospect camp and since he is only 22 he could be signed to play in Rockford if he doesn't catch on else where.

Speaking of Rockford they assigned forward David Gilbert to the Icehogs while sending three to their respective junior teams. Goalie Brandon Whitney and defensemen Travis Brown and Dillion Fournier were all part of prospect camp as well.

After the cuts the roster is down to 47 with 28 forwards, 14 defenseman and 5 goalies. The team will continue to cuts slowly over the next few weeks before probably settling on the final roster a week before the opener against the Capitals.
