Bill McCreary Tribute
William "Bill" McCreary was a referee in the National Hockey League. McCreary refereed his first NHL game in 1984 in Washington, D.C. He had a pregame ritual in which he flips the puck in the air before the opening faceoff. He is one of the most recognizable referee in the league.
McCreary has worked over 2,000 NHL games. But, he began officiating for three years playing Junior-A hockey in St. Catharines and Windsor. Then, later he joined the OHA as a linesman and worked the following two years as a referee.
After his third year in the OHA, John McCauley invited Bill McCreary to training camp. Then, he was able to work part-time in the Central and American Hockey Leagues for the season.
