Talk about a no brainer. I was sweating through the 5 picks before the Bears selected hoping that Wisconsin offensive tackle Gabe Carimi would fall to the Bears.
We had a team skip their pick and a trade right ahead of Chicago but when the 29th pick came up Carimi was still on the board. All I was thinking was how Jerry & Lovie were going to screw this up. Reportedly the Bears were in trade discussion with the Raven which is what caused Baltimore to skip their pick.
Shockingly they didn't mess it up and they made the smart pick and took Gabe.
Carimi who played left tackle for the Badgers but could line up at either tackle spot or maybe even guard in Chicago. I hope they keep him on the left side allowing Webb to stay on the right side and letting Chris Williams and Omiyale fight it out at LG.
Gabe is a huge guy. His measuribles are 6'7", 314lbs, his arm length is 35". His hand size is 10.3". He bench pressed 225 lbs 29 times. The best at the combine this year was 33. He almost had the best vertical jump of all the offense linemen. He is a very athletic guy who I think might have some trouble at first on the left side but he is smart enough to figure it out.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention he won the Outland Trophy this past season. He played and started in all 49 games he played in during college. He missed 3 games during his sophomore year due to a knee injury in 2008.
He might not be the flashy pick but it was the smart pick. Congrats to Gabe Carimi and I can't wait for you to start opening holes for Matt Forte and protecting Jay Cutler.
