Rumors have been flying around Minnesotta Wild starting goaltender Niklas Backstrom. Insiders say the 34 year old goalie fom Helsinki, Finland is quietly being shopped around on the trade market by GM Chuck Fletcher.

Many teams will have interest in the star veteran goalie including the Toronto Maple Leafs. After talks on the Luongo front cooled down between Leafs GM Brian Burke and Canucks GM Mike Gillis, the Leafs may be the front runners on Backstrom for the reason that Burke has been shopping around for a starting goaltender since the end of last season.

Because Chuck Fletcher is the son of Leafs assisstant GM Cliff Fletcher, Cliff may convince Chuck to the deal Backstrom to the Leafs cheap. The Leafs need to get Backstrom cheap as they need the pieces involved in a trade for a first line center.

The reason Backstrom is being shopped is for that Josh Harding, backup goaltender for the Wild is young and ready to play in the starting job this upcoming season.
